This is because every PVC floor is also a vinyl floor. But not every vinyl floor is necessarily a PVC floor. In the context of flooring, “vinyl” is often used as a synonym for polyvinyl chloride (PVC). In Germany, any plastic product whose name includes the word “vinyl” is allowed to use that designation. While this is good for marketing, it creates confusion among consumers.
In addition to a jute backing, linoleum floors are made from natural raw materials such as linseed oil, limestone powder, wood flour, or cork flour. Various natural resins are used as binders. However, there are also plastic-coated linoleum floors, which may consequently contain plasticizers and other harmful substances.
We compared PVC, vinyl, and linoleum flooring based on factors relevant to consumers. In doing so, we considered average floor traffic in residential and office spaces.
First of all: The biggest differences lie in the materials and their effects on health.
The relative freedom in product naming leads to confusion: “vinyl flooring,” “design flooring,” “PVC-free vinyl flooring,” “PVC-free design flooring,” etc. Essentially, the ingredients and their effects on health account for the biggest differences. However, these differences cannot be discerned from such product names alone. Furthermore, there are noticeable price differences between linoleum flooring on the one hand and PVC and vinyl flooring on the other.
