CLASSEN Breakthrough in the Production of PP Flooring – Sustainable Alternative to PVC Now Economically Competitive for the First Time

Published onApril 8, 2026
Kaisersesch, April 8, 2026 – The CLASSEN, one of the world’s leading pioneers in the field of non-PVC flooring, has achieved a major technological breakthrough: Thanks to a newly developed production process, polypropylene (PP)-based flooring can now be manufactured at the same cost level as traditional PVC products for the first time.

Even when PVC flooring first appeared on the market, CLASSEN made a CLASSEN decision not to use it—primarily because of the plasticizers and stabilizers it contains. Instead, the company embraced polypropylene early on, one of the world’s most important and, at the same time, cleanest plastics. PP is chemically stable, free of critical additives, and fully recyclable—ideal conditions for sustainable, closed-loop material cycles.

Over the course of more than 15 years of intensive research and development, CLASSEN has built up CLASSEN comprehensive portfolio of patents in the field of PP and also holds rights to production processes for other alternative plastics, such as PET. The company’s core conviction is clear: in terms of quality, environmental sustainability, health considerations, and technological performance, PP is the superior material solution for the future of the flooring industry.

For a long time, however, this superiority was considered economically unfeasible, as PP-based solutions were significantly more expensive than PVC products. The newly developed production process fundamentally changes this situation. Streamlined processes enable a significantly lower investment threshold, high scalability, and consistently high product quality—particularly in terms of dimensional stability, water resistance, and durability. At the same time, a price level comparable to that of PVC is being achieved for the first time.

CLASSEN this as the basis for a growing shift toward PP-based solutions in the market. Furthermore, the latest product developments show that PP is not only suitable for flooring but can also be used in other interior design applications—such as doors, wall paneling, moldings, or stair treads. In the future, this could lead to interior design solutions based entirely on PP, enabling consistent, single-material recycling.

CLASSEN is currently CLASSEN a comprehensive feasibility study on the global implementation of the new production concept. The study focuses on all key investment and location factors—from raw material availability and energy costs to scaling potential, as well as geopolitical developments and trade policy conditions such as tariffs. At the same time, the company is specifically evaluating partnership models to efficiently scale the technology internationally and implement it in various markets.

“We are convinced that PP is the right material in terms of quality, environmental friendliness, and health safety. With our new production process, we are now laying the economic groundwork to bring this conviction to market,” said Céline Quervel, Managing Director of Sales and Marketing at CLASSEN.
